Somatic Therapy in Chapel Hill & Durham, NC

What is Somatic Psychotherapy?

Somatic psychotherapy is a holistic, trauma-informed approach to therapy that works with both the mind and body to support healing. While traditional talk therapy often focuses primarily on identifying and changing thoughts, core beliefs, and emotions, somatic psychotherapies recognize the physical body and autonomic nervous system as integral in the treatment process. Through gentle awareness of bodily sensations, posture, action urges, movement, breath, emotions, and patterns of activation, somatic psychotherapies help clients notice and work with the body’s responses in real time, allowing unresolved survival energy (fight or flight patterns) to complete and protective attachment/relational strategies to gradually shift.

At Mindbody Therapy & Wellness, our therapists integrate evidence-based somatic modalities including Sensorimotor PsychotherapySomatic Experiencing, and Integrative Somatic Trauma Therapy to help clients heal trauma, anxiety, perfectionism, chronic stress, dissociation, and relationship difficulties.

Is somatic psychotherapy for me?

Somatic psychotherapy can be especially helpful for individuals who feel “stuck” despite insight-oriented therapy, struggle with chronic anxiety or overwhelm, feel disconnected from their body, or notice patterns such as people-pleasing, overthinking, hyper-independence, shutdown, or difficulty knowing, asking for, and receiving what you need and want in relationships. By supporting the autonomic nervous system and attachment systems gently but directly, this approach helps clients cultivate more clarity, grounding, self-compassion, and connection in daily life.
