Eye Movement Desensitization & Reprocessing (EMDR) in Chapel Hill & Durham, NC

What is Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing Therapy?

Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) therapy is a highly effective, evidence-based treatment designed to help individuals heal from trauma, anxiety, distressing memories, and overwhelming life experiences. EMDR works by helping the brain and autonomic nervous system reprocess experiences that may feel “stuck,” allowing painful memories to become less emotionally and physically activating over time. Unlike traditional talk therapy, EMDR does not require clients to repeatedly retell or relive traumatic experiences in detail in order to heal.

EMDR uses bilateral stimulation (eye movements, tapping, or auditory cues) to help the brain process unresolved experiences in a way that promotes nervous system regulation, emotional healing, and lasting change.

Many individuals seek EMDR therapy when they feel trapped in recurring emotional patterns, intrusive memories, hypervigilance, shame, people-pleasing, or difficulty feeling safe and connected in relationships. EMDR can help reduce the intensity of triggers while strengthening a person’s ability to feel grounded, empowered, and present in everyday life. This approach is especially beneficial for individuals who intellectually understand their patterns but continue to feel emotionally reactive, overwhelmed, or stuck in survival mode.

Is EMDR a fit for me?

Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) therapy follows an eight-phase structured approach designed to help individuals safely process traumatic or distressing experiences while supporting nervous system regulation and emotional resilience. Each phase builds upon the next, creating a trauma-informed framework that prioritizes safety and pacing.

Phase 1: History Taking & Treatment Planning
Your therapist gathers information about your history, current symptoms, relationships, and goals for therapy. Together, you identify the experiences, memories, beliefs, or triggers that may be contributing to anxiety, trauma responses, low self-worth, or emotional distress.

Phase 2: Preparation & Nervous System Resourcing
Before processing traumatic memories, the focus is on building emotional safety, grounding skills, and nervous system regulation tools. Clients learn coping strategies, mindfulness skills, and somatic resources to help them feel more supported and empowered throughout the EMDR process. Other somatic psychotherapies may be integrate in this phase.

Phase 3: Assessment
During this phase, the therapist helps identify the specific memory being targeted, along with the negative beliefs, emotions, body sensations, and desired positive beliefs connected to the experience.

Phase 4: Desensitization
Using bilateral stimulation such as guided eye movements, tapping, or auditory tones, the brain begins to reprocess the distressing memory. Clients often notice shifts in emotions, thoughts, body sensations, and insight as the nervous system processes unresolved material.

Phase 5: Installation
Once the distress connected to the memory decreases, the therapist helps strengthen a healthier, more adaptive beliefs such as “I am safe,” “I am enough,” or “I have choices now.”

Phase 6: Body Scan
Because trauma is often held in the body, clients are guided to notice any lingering tension, activation, or discomfort connected to the memory. Additional processing may occur to support deeper mind-body healing.

Phase 7: Closure
At the end of each session, the therapist helps ensure the client feels grounded and emotionally regulated before leaving. Closure may include calming exercises, reflection, or resourcing techniques.

Phase 8: Reevaluation
At the beginning of future sessions, the therapist checks in on previously processed memories, current symptoms, and new insights to determine next steps in treatment.
