Mindfulness-Based CBT in Chapel Hill & Durham, NC

What is Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Behavioral Therapy?

Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Behavioral Therapy is an evidence-based approach that combines the practical tools of cognitive behavioral therapy with mindfulness and present-moment awareness practices. MBCT helps individuals become more aware of unhelpful thought patterns, emotional reactions, and stress responses without becoming overwhelmed or consumed by them. Rather than automatically reacting to anxiety, self-criticism, or difficult emotions, clients learn how to respond with greater awareness, balance, and self-compassion.

At Mindbody Therapy & Wellness, our therapists use Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Behavioral Therapy to help clients manage anxiety, depression, perfectionism, chronic stress, burnout, and relationship challenges. MBCT integrates mindfulness meditation, nervous system awareness, and cognitive therapy techniques to help clients interrupt cycles of rumination, overthinking, emotional reactivity, and negative self-talk.

Unlike traditional CBT, which focuses heavily on changing thoughts, mindfulness-based CBT also emphasizes changing one’s relationship to thoughts and emotions. Clients learn to notice internal experiences with curiosity rather than judgment, creating more emotional flexibility and resilience over time. This approach can be especially beneficial for high-achieving individuals who struggle with worry, people-pleasing, difficulty slowing down, or feeling stuck in cycles of self-pressure and overwhelm.

Your therapist may also include Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT) skills into therapy. These skills help support healing by strengthening emotional regulation, interpersonal effectiveness, and distress tolerance.

Through consistent use of MBCT and DBT practices, many individuals experience greater calm, improved coping skills, healthier relationships, and a stronger sense of confidence and choice in everyday life.
